Dr. Hew Len Ho’oponopono: The Story of Dr. Hew Len

The great effect of Ho’oponopono was felt at the Hawaii State Hospital. The hospital had a ward specifically for criminals with psychiatric and psychological problems. The Dr. Hew Lenmental ward was always chaotic. A nurse reported that no day would end without a brawl among patients, the nurses, and the rest of the staff. The mental ward was so destructive and depressive that the staff would go on sick-leave a lot of times. All of that changed when clinical psychologist Dr. Stanley Hew Len worked at the ward.

Dr. Hew Len didn’t really do anything special explicitly. He would just arrive in the office every morning with a cheerful and tranquil disposition. Dr. Hew Len never made personal visits to the inmates but he would browse through their files from time to time. Strangely enough, things started to change in the mental ward.

The prisoners and the staff gradually got a long with each other. The inmates were less destructive and the mental ward employees made more initiative to make the ward a better place (e.g. well-maintained tennis courts, painted walls). Inmates took less heavy medications.

Dr. Hew Len worked in the mental ward for almost four years and during that period, prisoners were released and the staff performed their responsibilities dutifully again. Only a few inmates were left and eventually, they were transferred to other wards. The clinic was closed down because barely any inmates were left.

Dr. Hew Len Ho’oponopono: The Concept of Ho’oponopono

As you can see in the story, it seems like Dr. Hew Len did not do anything except go through the files of the inmates. However, Dr. Hew Len would explain the concept of Ho’oponopono to the members of the staff who were interested. The explanation of Dr. Hew Len Ho’oponopono is that your perception of the world and anything that happens to you is your own doing. Simply put, the world you live in is your own creation.

Dr. Hew Len isn’t saying that you should blame yourself for whatever is happening to you and around you. Rather, he is encouraging people to actively participate in healing themselves whenever a problem inflicts them. Ho’oponopono is all about being flexible in living life. The key is to always remember that everything is 100% your responsibility. It is then your job to be at peace with yourself.

The words “I’m sorry” and “I love you” are very operative in Ho’oponopono because these are words that commence the process of being at peace with the Divine within yourself and with others. Along the way, you free the mind from any past anger, hurt, and regret. When you’ve done this, you say “Thank You.” Once you’ve gone back to your clean and free state, you can begin to face life without any negative feelings.
